CO2.[:en]The use of alkali-activated binders as construction materials is now gaining a high degree of momentum and interest worldwide. This is particularly focused on reducing emissions, as well as use of these materials in some niche applications as they provide performance advantages including good resistance to high temperatures and chemically aggressive environments. This paper provides a brief discussion of the role of scientific investigation, conducted in parallel with larger-scale trials, in analysing and proving the durability of alkali-activated binders. Commercial developments taking place in different parts of the world are also highlighted, to demonstrate that alkali-activation is a scaleable and viable technology in the production of low-construction materials.[:]
