Abstract
This study focusses on the combined utilization of cellulose ethers with silicone hydrophobic powders used as integral water repellent, in cement-based mortars. It is observed that this combined use leads to some decrease of the hydrophobic surface properties of modified mortars. Migration of silane/silicone resin from the bulk of the mortar to the surface is suggested to be a key step to enable surface hydrophobic properties. Role of the different migration mechanisms of silane/silicone resin is discussed. A model trying to explain the hydrophobic performance of the bulk and the top surface of modified mortars is proposed.
