Abstract
According to USGS estimates, the world output of lime in 2008 (Fig. 1) increased by 3 % compared to the previous year, up to about 300 mn tons. The share of China exceeds 60 % of the world lime production volume. According to expert estimations, annual output of this product in China totals over 180 mn tons. The USA is ranked second by lime production volume (19.9 mn tons in 2008), Russia is on the third place (11.5 mn tons).
Considering that lime is a relatively inexpensive bulk product, volume of foreign trade transactions with lime is extremely low. Majority of countries possess their own carbonate rocks deposits and satisfy demand for them on account of domestic production. As a rule, foreign trade supplies are only made for not long distances, mainly to European countries.
Major share in consumption of lime in the USA, according to USGS, falls onto metallurgical industry totaling 36 % of the overall consumption in the country. Then, the following fields of application are listed, in decreasing order: industrial use (chemical, pulp-and-paper, sugar sectors) — 22 %, environment protection — 12 %, and other applications — 11 %.
