Abstract
The spray-applied waterproofing method was developed and successfully applied in tunnels over the past decades and provides a new approach for the improvement of waterproofing quality of tunnels and underground structures. The acrylate spray-applied waterproofing membrane is one of the competitive materials and has been successfully applied in many cases in China since 1990s. The technical contents of the acrylate spray-applied waterproofing were briefly introduced here including the polymerization mechanism, the spraying equipment, the application requirements and quality control to enhance the understanding of this technology. The spray-applied acrylate waterproofing has been used in over 10 cases and an industrial standard for this technology has been published in China, which demonstrates the successful and potential application of this technology. Three typical cases including a railway tunnel (1999, the first application case in China), a road tunnel (2010, locates at high altitude position) and an underpass (cut-and-cover tunnel, 2013) were introduced to illustrate the application procedures and effects of this technology. More cases will be expected with the planning, design and construction of a number of tunnels and underground facilities in China in the near future.
