Abstract

Recently in Lebanon about 80 % of the collected MSW by different companies go to landfills. Ministry of Environment had reported in 2001, that Lebanon generated about 1, 44 million tonnes of MSW (about 3,940 tonnes per day), or about 0.92 kg per person per day.

Emergency Plan for Municipal solid wastes management in Great Beirut established in 1997 called for decreasing the quantities going to landfills to 40.5 %, this could be reached by increasing the recycling capacity to 9.5 % and composting to 50 %.
