Abstract
Micro-Deval and wear-abrasion “Böhme” tests are reliable tools to assess abrasion wear for aggregates and their mortars respectively. These techniques are reported in this paper to characterize and compare calcium aluminate aggregate named CAT (Corrosion Abrasion Temperature resistant aggregate) among other hard materials like quartz and corundum. In this sense, Portland and calcium-aluminate cements have been also used with CAT and quartz aggregates to test mortar bulk density, consistence, mechanical strength and abrasion resistance. Although good affinity between calcium-aluminate cement and CAT has been found, it has been seen that mortar abrasion-resistance depends strongly on the aggregate nature. The research results have shown that calcium-aluminate aggregate is an outstanding material tough enough for a wide range of heavy abrasion applications and its cost / durability ratio supports global project sustainability.
