Abstract

A detailed life cycle assessment (LCA) of cement production study was conducted. Potentials for reducing emissions and saving energy and natural resources in Chinese cement industry and how the Best Available Techniques (BATs) would provide a maximum environmental benefit were identified. The input includes limestone, sandstone, ferrous tailings, coal, and electricity; output includes CO2 from limestone decomposition and coal combustion; NOx, PM and SO2 of cement production were calculated. The calculated data were collected from on-site measurements and estimated coefficients and derivation by mass and heat balance principle. The direct (cement manufacturing) and indirect (electricity production) input and output including mass flows and energy flows are documented as cement production life cycle inventory (LCI) results. The impact categories of global warming potential (GWP), acidification potential (AP), eutrophication potential (EP), photochemical oxidant formation potential (POCP), and human toxicity potential (HTP) are used to calculate environmental impact. The LCA study allows to get indicators of this process from the point of view of total environmental impact.
