Abstract

The brittle nature of ordinary concrete affects its corrosion resistance when exposed to chloride ions, moisture, carbon dioxide, etc., as these substances can penetrate ferroconcrete structures to the reinforcing steel and cause spalling and delamination of the surface layer of RC at post-corrosion stages. Recently, high performance fiber reinforced cementitious composites (HPFRCC) have been developed, which exhibit strain hardening and multiple cracking behaviour with small crack width as well as high fracture resistance capacity. Due to their small crack width property, the penetration of aggressive substances through the cracks is reduced and prevented, and spalling and delamination of cover concrete are also reduced due to their high fracture resistance and high tensile strain capacities. This paper presents the state-of-the-art of some durability applications of HPFRCC, namely, resistance to chloride induced corrosion and shrinkage cracking.
