Abstract
Next to water, cement is the second most consumed substance on earth. However, aspects of the mechanisms of hydration and microstructural evolution in Portland cement are still not fully understood. Recent advances in cement hydration and nano-characterization techniques for Portland cement have started to unravel the basic cement hydration phases (C–S–H gel in particular) at the nano scale. It is likely that Portland cement and several others can be classified as “inorganic cements”, since they share many common characteristics at the nano scale structure level; still, each system possesses its own unique reaction mechanisms due to specific reaction environments. In this paper, such similarities are discussed and highlighted. The ability to tailor chemical structures of inorganic cements at the nano scale level can not only render improved mechanical properties but also possibly create very unique microstructures. Therefore, exciting opportunities exist to develop next generation cements, and to obtain new fundamental cement knowledge which may open doors for revolutionary processes of making sustainable Portland cement as well.
