Abstract
An overview of recent new findings and breakthroughs in the development of polycarboxylate superplasticizer (PCE) is summarized in this paper. First, the relationship between adsorption, cement hydration and fluidity is discussed, and a deeper understanding of the difference between PCE and NSF and the effect of charge on the PCE properties is given. In addition, the synthesis and properties of a new PCE structure are summarized. Furthermore, the new findings on the application of PCE are described. Finally, the article concludes that even though a great progress on PCE has been made over the past more than 30 years, still a lot of challenges need solving to obtain a high performance PCE to be used in various complex situations.
