Abstract

Indian cement industry though it is the second largest in the world after Chinese, has global cement majors in commanding positions, and technologically advanced plants; is largely confined to domestic production and consumption. To the outside world, the journey that the industry has travelled in its more than 100 years of history and its achievements are largely unknown. The purpose of this article is to acquaint the international readers having interest in cement and allied businesses, about the cement industry in India in a very simple manner, yet covering all the facts about the industry. Where we are today is a matter of pride for the industry, but on our way to our place in global context we have seen many shades of ups and downs. We have travelled the journey of the industry being under tight control of the government to the extent of a buyer needing a permit to buy a bag of cement to the time where it is freely available in every nook and corner of a country as diverse as India. We have evolved from cement plants with a meagre capacity of a few thousands of tons of cement to world’s largest cement kiln at one of the plants and to probably world’s largest single location cement plant. Today our plants are amongst the most energy efficient plants and our products meet the global best in terms of specifications and performance. The industry has come a long way and yet has many more miles to go.
