Abstract
During the past five years, Arab cement industry experienced accelerating progress, the development of this industry being strongly related to the growth of building and construction industry that included all Arab countries unprecedentedly. This growth represented 5 percent of total Arab GDP, which led to the increase of demand for cement at a rate of 15–20 percent in all Arab countries. Consequently, most Arab countries became cement importers after having been main Arab cement exporting countries, such as Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
Number of cement factories in all Arab countries was, by end 2008, 138 integrated cement plants, 13 mills, 4 packaging stations and four terminals (Table 1).
Statistical figures indicate that the number of greenfield plants which started full production will increase from 138 to around 178 plants by 2012.
