Abstract
The use of alternative fuels for the combustion in cement plants is a method to reduce production cost whilst releasing stress on the environment which is applied by the European cement industry since approximately half a century already. Material which would otherwise have become waste and dumped is this being used to substitute fossil fuels for the supply of the immense energy demand of the cement production. These material streams can be residues from industrial, commercial or agricultural activity or municipal household waste. As seemingly elegant and reasonable this concept looks at the first glance, there are a multitude of complexities coming up when this idea is being implemented in real industrial use.
